It carries out the functions and duties of the Ministry of the Interior in the protection of civil rights, including those concerning immigration and asylum, citizenship and religious confessions.

As regards immigration and asylum, it contributes to the definition of the migration policies of the Government, also to ensure both the reception and assistance of asylum seekers and the first aid to irregular migrants landed or found on national territory.
